Stroke of Insight-Um series

On the morning of December 10, 1996, Jill Bolte Taylor, a thirty-seven-year-old Harvard-trained brain scientist, experienced a massive stroke when a blood vessel exploded in the left side of her brain. A neuroanatomist by profession, she observed her own mind completely deteriorate to the point that she could not walk, talk, read, write, or recall any of her life, all within the space of four brief hours. As the damaged left side of her brain–the rational, grounded, detail- and time-oriented side–swung in and out of function, Taylor alternated between two distinct and opposite realties: the euphoric nirvana of the intuitive and kinesthetic right brain, in which she felt a sense of complete well-being and peace; and the logical, sequential left brain, which recognized Jill was having a stroke, and enabled her to seek help before she was lost completely.

The parallels between Jill’s experience and Vedanta are too close to ignore. The striking points she makes in her book and video below are these.

1.The Left Cortex of the brain is the ego centre which grants you the memory of separateness from the whole. If only the Right Cortex were to operate you would not make out the physical outline of your body as separate from the energy whole of the universe.

2.The Right Cortex processes information paralelly whereas the Left Cortex processes it serially. The sense of always being stuck in the past or future and never in the present comes from the Left Cortex.

3.Is the world truly real when the images you see as the world could very well be a sequence of images stored in your left cortex . Maybe the world is a common dream of humanity which is projected outward and experienced inward.

4.Her experience is very similar to a feeling of Nirvana…Moksha where you no longer have an sense of ego and feel yourself as part of an energy whole.

5.Meditation is scientifically proven to activate neurons in the Right Cortex and help in the production of Serotonin (the happiness harmone ) .

I will leave it to you guys to watch the video but do pay attention to the Harvard Scientist’s soulful appeal in the very end where she says ” I realized if I can have this beautiful experience of oneness with the universe with my Right Cortex operation…I realized everybody else can consciously decide to do also ”

Stroke of Insight

All that glitters is not gold and neither is what you see the true world 🙂 !!!!!! You perceive only what you want to perceive.

As I have said before modern science is slowly realizing its limitations in understanding the human brain and consciousness .
