# 108-Sacred code of the Universe

The number 108 is often venerated in hindu circles and is widely used as the number to be used for repetitions of mantras and monetary donations . Very few would realize that this number is the sacred code of the universe and is found in both the micro and the macro aspects of the cosmos. Prof subhash kak has done a wonderful research on this number and before we head in that direction let me get you interested a little more….

1.In Hindu astrology there are 12 Rashis and 9 Planets or . 12 X 9 = 108. There are 27 Lunar mansions or Nakshatras which are divided in 4 Padas or quarters each. 27 X 4 = 108.

2.There are 108 Principal Upanishads in the Rig Veda.

3.There are said to be 108 marmas ( Ayurvedic life points ) in the human body.

4.Natya Sastra has 108 karanas or combined movements of the hand and feet.

5.There are 54 letters in the Sanskrit alphabet and each can take either masculine or feminine forms . 54*2=108.

6.The angle formed in a pentagon by adjacent sides is 108 . Pentagon as you are aware is called the star of david and is the core geometrical shape of many yantras including the famed Sri Yantra.

7.The heart chakra has 108 pathways through which during the time of death the jivatma leaves for higher planes , only one of the paths the 108th path pierces the sahasara and leads to Moksha.

8.Sri chakra is the geometrical shape which is the intersection of 54 lines each with a feminine and masculine quality . 54 *2 =108.

Some additional thoughts.

The ninth house in a horoscope is representative of Dharma, Father , Bhagya and Purva Punya. It is the house of spirituality of the native. The number 9 always has been identified with the infinite in Vedic mathematics which gave to the world the decimal system. Of course western historians will again give their usual rat brained explanations that this was the simple beleif of ancient nomads who probably only could count till 9 and were terrified of the beyond and hence gave the status of 9 to the infinite.

Let us look at an Nonagon ( Enneagon ) a nine sided Polygon which is the first of the N shape polygons which cannot be easily constructed using an ruler and compass. You will need additional instruments or would have to take the help of an CAD enabled computer software to make this shape. The Ancients used a lot of sacred geometry in their daily rituals of Yantra.

Nonagon=Nine sided Polygon.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nonagon

“This is the first polygon with a non-prime base (as distinct from the heptagon, 7 being a prime number) that eludes construction with ruler and compass. This contrasts sharply with the division of the circle into 4 or 6 or 12, which is so simple and natural, or with its division into 5 or 10, which is more complicated but very rewarding (yielding the Golden Section) and at any rate possible. So, 9, though analysable as 3 x 3, is elusive. Does anyone care to read some symbolism into this property? If 7 represents the mystical eluding the rational, what should be represented by 9, which is more structured yet equally eludes rational construction? Let’s see: how about God, who always eludes our concepts?”

Taking this approach even further…

Now that we have linked 9 to 108 . In vedic mathematics the energy of an number is also evaluated from the sum of its individual digits. Please do not confuse this with thinking the ancients did not know the number system nor count to more than 9. They did give the world the decimal system.

Energy of 54 = 5+4 =9

Energy of 27= 2+7=9

Energy of 216= 2+1+6=9

Energy of 314=3+1+4=9

Now notice all these numbers …notice anything strange …..Yes all of them are multiples of 108 or perfect divisions of 108.

108/2=54= Energy Signature 9

108*1=108=Energy Signature 9

108*2=216=Energy Signature 9

108*3=324=Energy Signature 9

Okay enough of this nonsense mystical representations you say…Well then some cold hard logic based scientific facts for you.

*Distance between earth and sun = 108 times sun-diameter,

* Distance between earth and moon = 108 times moon-diameter, and *most remarkably*,

* Diameter of the sun = 108 times the earth diameter.

The rig veda which is a huge astronomical code of the cosmic skies often uses the number 108 for the construction of Yagna shalas and other altars. Also 108 is intimately related to Pi the golden mean which occurs everywhere in nature starting from flower pattersn to tsunami whirls to stock market patterns. I will explore Pi in a different post.
